What Causes Itchy Skin Rashes And Elevated Blood Sugar Level While On Prednisone?

I'm diabetic type 2. I was taking metformin but they took me off and added Lantus 20 units at night. I began breaking out with red itchy rash and no creams help. Dr gave me a different pill to replace the insulin 2 days ago and also prednisone 20 units, now my sugar was never past 165 but last night it was 410 and this morning 180 so I was afraid to the prednisone again. The rash could be a yeast infection so I tried ministry over counter. I'm still itching so badly. What should do

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
Itchy rashes can be due to allergy to a medicine. Due to which you are stopped taking the insulin. However it can be due to fungal infection, but chances of this is less.
So prednisolone was given to you to counter that allergy. Elevated blood glucose level in a diabetic patient is common after administrating prednisolone. So you should not worry, slowly your blood sugar level will fall.
According to me you should also take anti allergy medicine like cetrizine/benedryl.

Refer to your doctor
Hope this information helps

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have itchy skin rashes and elevated blood sugar level while on Prednisone . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query , but in your case it seems to me that the symptoms are probably due to prednisone as its side effects . It is recommend to consult doctor without any delay when counter side effects like rise in blood sugar level and skin rashes and hives . Doctor may alter the dose or prescribe substitute . I would suggest you to low your sugar consumption level , apply cold compresses on rashes to relieve itchiness and drink plenty of water .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
