What Causes Itchy Welts On The Forearm After Placing Stents?

My husband recently had 2 stents put in through angioplasty and was given Plavix. He had the procedure on June 9th and on June 20th developed these huge welts on his forearms and his hands blew up and were terribly itchy. Didn t know if this was due to the Plavix (he took it 15 years ago with no problem) or from something he touched in our backyard. He took Benedryl and after 3 days was back to normal but he said he hands are SOOO itchy....Could it be the medicine?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The medication would normally cause a generalized rash, it should not affect a specific area. The fact that one specific area is affected implies that it is due to contact with a chemical or substance.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
