Mi my name is Travis. I am 19 years old and in the Military (no deployments). I have noticed lately I talk a lot in my sleep and I will wake up at times hitting my wall or jerking. Also lately my girlfriend has told me I jerk a lot in my sleep and it scares her. I ve almost punched her in my sleep and still I stay asleep. Is this normal? I don t know what to do because she doesn t want me sleeping with her because it scares her. What s wrong with me?
What you are experiencing is actually a pretty common phenomenon called a hypnic jerk or hypnogogic jerk. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, there are a wide range of potential causes, including anxiety, caffeine, stress and strenuous activities in the evening. However, most hypnic jerks occur essentially randomly in healthy people. It is unknown why this experience is so common, but probably is a reflex left over from evolution, as it may have been useful back when our ancestors slept in trees.
While this is a normal thing to happen, sometimes it can be a symptom of poor sleep hygiene. If you are concerned, visit your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist to help you brainstorm ways to address this in more depth.
The symptoms of speaking, walking, jerky movements etc during sleep is very common. It is called as abnormal sleep behaviour. Which mostly occurs during REM part of sleep.People usually act out their dreams during this period.
You will need some medications like SSRI which can reduce REM sleep. Please consult a psychiatrist for same.
