What Causes Knee Pain When Diagnosed With Diabetes And Nerve Damage In Legs?

Hi, I fell over on Friday and grazed my knee, it s been stinging on and off all weekend but tonight feels like I m being pricked with hundreds of pins and the area around the graze feels rather hot , I ve applied savlon which made it sting even more, I m a type 1 diabetic and have slight nerve damage in my feet and legs. Do you think the nerve damage is just magnifying the pain or could it be the start of an infection,

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the presence of diabetes with history of recent knee trauma indicates that there is possible issue of soft tissue infection causing intense pain. In usual cases, staph aureus is the major pathogen responsible for the pain and stinging at injury site. The nerve issue is not of that concerning which is a chronic course
problem.

The following measures will help you:
- Keep the part clean with antiseptic liquid
- Local application of Neomycin cream
- Prescription of penicillin (as mox with clavulanic acid) or cephalosporin would help better recovery and prevent further spread of infection.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
