What Causes Knee Stiffness And Pain Above Kneecap?

5 days ago I felt a little stiffness in my knee. I put a tens unit on it for a half hour or so and some icy hot. At time knee was not bruise doe swollen. Several hours later knee swelled up very badly and deep bruising was present. Still hurts, can walk with a limp and stand on the injured leg without support. Pain mostly is above the knee cap on inside part of right leg. No feeling of instability just difficulty bending. Feel extreme pressure when trying to bend.

Hi,

Swelling in the knee may be due to several causes. Trauma is the common cause for knee swelling. Osteoarthritis is the cause for knee swelling in old age. Bruising indicates blood leakage from the vessel in the site of damage. Bruising in the knee indicates bleeding into the knee joint.

If knee swelling is seen after the trauma, it should be evaluated for injury to the structures of the knee joint. If the cause is not trauma, it should be evaluated. Overuse of the joint may also cause knee swelling. Depends on the cause, the management differs. Analgesics and anti inflammatory agents are prescribed for pain and swelling due to trauma and arthritic causes. Antibiotics are advised in case of septic bursitis. Visit the orthopedist for detailed evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
