What Causes Lack Of Concentration And Focus In Children?

My kindergartener is having trouble focusing in class. She doesn t seem to have this problem at home. She says she starts to daydream and go into her own little world. How can you tell if a child is just bored and not challenged, or if there is a learning disability?

Hello,

Your child going to kindergartener school does not have any problem at home but you feel at school she is having some problem. You are suggested to give your daughter quality time. When she is fine at home, it means that there may be some problem at school with which she is not comfortable adjusting with. Not all school environment is cool, pay attention to what's happening in the school, talk to her. Every child is unique, never force her to adjust with anything she is not comfortable with, that's not fair.

Watch your daughter, if she is interactive with peers, if she is curious and asks you many questions, loves attention and also shares attention, is playful but takes safety instructions, she normally runs and climbs are few examples that your child is normal. Spend more time with her and make sure your family environment is loving and normal, children get affected with unnatural family environment.

Reassure your child that you love her, some children do day dream and that's normal. Don't leave her alone keep interacting with her so that she's not excessively day dreaming. Remind her of the next day home and school schedules, plan picnics and outings with her. Make life interesting for her. You will definitely see changes in her, she will become more attentive and alert. Reward her whenever you feel she is making efforts to improve.

In case you find that the child is excessively hyperactive, fearful, getting submissive, responds aggressively to shared attention, has intentional harmful behavior, is cruel to pets then such behavior is a cause of concern and you should take counsel from a pediatrician or health care provider / psychologist. To help your child stay focused remove all kinds of electronic items, cellphones, television, PC, laptops, etc.

Try having your child walk, play outside after school, do chores around the house like singing or dancing/ exercising, etc. Make sure your child has had a chance to run, walk, or jump around before sitting down to do some coloring work, drawing, or doing indoor games. Teach her to ignore distractions when she is doing tasks like drawing, coloring ,etc. She will slowly learn to focus well. Make sure she gets enough sleep. Give her home made nutritious food.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Pallavi.m's  Response
Hello,

Regarding your kid's lack of concentration at school the following are few observations I made from my patients who came to me with similar complaints:
1) If the lack of focus is confined to one place and is not universal, it means the place is a bit problematic to the child
2) If the kid is absolutely normal at home, it means she's encountering for some kind of problem at school that's not allowing her to focus
3) Please do not jump into conclusions and please do not let the child know anything about this
4) You don't need to worry as long as she's playing with her friends, speaking well with others, eating adequate and sleeping adequate
5) Also check if she is able to read and write properly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
