What Causes Lack Of Energy, Lack Of Desire And Severe Mood Swings?

Dr Rynne, I have been experiencing a lack of energy, lack of desire and severe mood swings. Some days I am happy but most I just want to sleep. I don t want to interact with my family and I lash out at my spouse when I don t even have a reason to. Could it be depression?

General Surgeon 's  Response
The symptoms you are giving does suggest a psychiatric problem, probably depression. However there are certain endocrine diseases which could also be the reason of your symptoms. For example a pituitary or thyroid dysfunction can cause similar features. It is best you first consult an Endocrinologist, who can thoroughly investigate you, and if any such disease is diagnosed, he can advise you on the management. However if all these tests come out negative, then I strongly suggest you consult a Psychiatrist, who after carrying out the necessary investigations can diagnose your condition and start you on the correct therapy.
