For the last month or so I have had a greasy, milky taste in my mouth that is centered on my tongue surface. In addition, there does not seem to be enough saliva to swallow properly.I am 70 and in generally good health.Where should I start looking for a remedy?Tom Lea

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the cause of altered taste in mouth can be related to the dryness of mouth..

The patients who has a dry mouth suffers commonly from an altered taste in mouth as the saliva required for the hydration, maintenance and proper function of taste buds is absent and it leads to atrophy of the taste buds..

In absence of adequate saliva there can be increased infections of the mouth due to incomplete flushing action of saliva leading to more food debris present in mouth leading to more infections and this can also cause altered taste..

Dry mouth can be caused by certain medicines, nerve damage, sjogren's syndrome, salivary gland dysfunctions etc.

I would suggest you to consult an oral pathologist and get evaluated..

In case of dry mouth artificial saliva agents can be used..

There are certain ways to stimulate saliva production like by chewing sugar free chewing gums and citrus candies..

Drink plenty of cold water to reduce any inflammation in mouth.

Maintain a good oral hygiene to avoid infections.

Use antimicrobial mouth wash to gargle..

Hope your query is solved..
