What Causes Left-sided Abdominal Pain?

my husband has abdominal pain on the left side about hipbone level . he has previous hernia surgeries and a urostomy post bladder cancer. his yearly checkup with his urologist was last week and he has no further problem with cancer. this pain began about 36 hours ago and appeared to be food related. since it is continuing we are becoming concerned about waiting until tues. to see his doctor. is this a safe interval and what is on the left side?

Hi,

Noted the history about your husband having Ureterostomy after treatment of cancer of bladder cancer, pain on left side of abdomen which you feel to be food related. The most probable causes of left sided pain in males are as follows:
- Colitis
- Intestinal obstruction
- Ureteric stone

If you have antispasmodic medicine like Drotaverine or so, please give him one tablet to relieve some pain. If the pain does not relieve then it is better to take him to ER for proper clinical evaluation, investigations and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

General & Family Physician Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey's  Response
Hello, thank you again for your question. Left side abdominal pain can be caused from the organ around there. There are stomach, intestines, ureter, spleen, kideney, muscle, ect.. Left side abdominal pain usually accompanied by symptoms such as belching, bloating, or a hard abdomen is typically indicative of indigestion. However, if you’re experiencing upper or lower left side pain coupled with a high fever, nausea, vomiting, or severe stomach pain, seek emergency care to rule out any of the serious conditions.

Hope you have good health. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, Family and General Physician.
