i have had a headache for 4 days. When i go to bed i instantly get a headache on the left side of my head. It includes my head& eye. Stays with me for at least 3 hours after i get up. Goes away then starts again when i lay down again very intense pain
The most common cause for prolonged severe headache is a migraine. It also tends to be one sided. Treatment of migraines can involve the use of medications to treat the headache and also medications to stop headaches from occurring in persons who get them frequently or severely.
Determining if there is a trigger is also important. Cheese, stress, lack of sleep, excess electronic use, chocolate, red wine can be triggers. The medicines are ibuprofen, voltaren, naproxen, paracetamol, celebrex are tried. Initially if there is no improvement then opioids can be considered or there are triptans which are migraine specific medicines - sumitriptan.
Very severe headache can also be due to more serious causes as well so it is best to see your doctor for an asessment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
