What Causes Left-sided Hip Pain While Having Mirena?
Hi: I had a Mirena inserted 6 years ago ... I went to have it out last year ... and it cannot be found. No strings ... I have been having a lot of pain on my left side by my hip bone. I am thinking the mirena dislodged ... I have been to the local doctors and a gyno ... but it is presumed that the device just fell out ... I will NEVER believe that it just fell out. HELP...
Hi there and thanks for sharing your question with us at HCM.
The Mirena IUD has been a successful choice of contraception for millions of users. Unfortunately, for some, it has cause a lot of trouble. There have been cases where an IUD can migrate by perforating through the uterus (the uterus can be exceptionally soft and easily penetrable especially after pregnancy and delivery) and settling itself elsewhere in the body. There are also cases where the IUD has been expulsed. However, X-rays and / or ultrasounds need to be done to confirm that the device is no longer in your body.
Therefore, I recommend that you firmly request that an X-ray be done to prove whether the Mirena is still within your body or not. Given your left sided pain in the hip, I am concerned that it might have lodged itself in that area. Once you have proof that it is still in your body, it needs to be surgically removed. Consider getting legal representation, other women who have required surgical removal of the Mirena have done so. Hope this helps- take care and good luck.
