What Causes Left-sided Pain And Swelling In Rib Cage And Abdomen?

I am a 60 year old female with pain on my left side, from my rib cage to the bottom of my stomach. It almost feels like I am swollen on that side. When I bend over it is very painful on the bottom of my stomach, I have been to the doctor several times with this pain. He treated me for what he thought it was. Shingles. no luck. I just had a colonoscopy yesterday and all is ok. it appears to be more painful sitting that standing. do you have any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from pain and swelling in the left side of the rib cage and abdomen. You are swollen and on bending you have a lot of pain in the abdomen. You have not give any history of your past illness. Since you are having left sided pain, get routine cardiac tests done, get clinically examined by a cardiologist / GP to rule out any developing coronary artery disease that requires treatment. Avoid constipation at all cost as it triggers gas formation and acidity / discomfort and pain abdomen.

You can take PPIs, one SOS when needed for relief. To help better bowel movement take adequate amount of water and fluids, take high fiber diet, if needed you can take laxatives. For sprain and strain or costochondritis, you can take acetaminophen, one SOS when needed. Gentle massage or applying pain relieving sprays may help. Get clinically evaluated for any kidney or spleen problem, ovarian swelling, diverticulitis, etc. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
