What Causes Left-sided Pain In The Upper Ribs Of A 49-year-old?

I woke this morning with pain in my upper ribs on the left side. Seems to cover as much space as my hand will from front to back. Cannot seem to get a full breath without it stabbing. I have not been ill and my heart rate is not irregular. 49 years old

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it seems to be muscular or pleuritic and doesn't seem to be due to heart however, a baseline EKG and chest X-ray may be needed. If both are normal it can be costochondral or due to rib muscles. Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be helpful for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
