Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, first off I would like to give a little back info, about 3 years ago I used to weigh 375 LBS, and my height is 6 2. Since then, I ve lost over 100 LBS and I m now weighing in at 260 LBS, with a goal weight of 200 LBS. Anyway, my question is related to this because I ve recently noticed an increased awareness of my organs, and I feel my ribs a lot more than Before. I assume this is because I have much less fat on my body, so this doesn t alarm me. However, for the past 2 months or so, I ve felt a little presence right under the left side of my ribcage, near my liver. I don t feel it all the time, only a few times a day, but sometimes it is accompanied by a slight sharp pain. The pain isn t bad, but I do feel it. What could this be? Another piece of information too: I compete in the sport of boxing, so I sometimes take shots to the body, so that could explain it. I am in very good shape, and I workout 9-11 times a week. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
The feeling which you have observed over left side of rib cage might be a fatty lump, also called lipoma however I would like to recommend an ultrasound to rule out any enlargement of any underlying organ. I would like to mention that the liver is situated on the right side and there is spleen on the left side under the rib cage.
The swelling could be because of the enlargement of these organs which can be identified by an ultrasound of abdomen. If the swelling is from the fatty tissue over that area then it will also get identified in the same ultrasound. The third possibility is of a hematoma (blood collection in the tissue) due to your sports activity which also can be found out by the same ultrasound.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
