What Causes Left Sided Shoulder And Back Pain?

Hi Doc, I have been experiencing shoulder and back pain on the left side. It gets worse in the resting position at night time and disturbs my sleep. I am a 59 yr old male, hv hd two angioplasties in 2004 and 2014. I am hypertensive and diabetic as well. Doctors are unable to diagnose my condition correctly and treating me with pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs which are not very helpful. Could you pls guide me what should I do??

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about left shoulder and back pain that is not responding to routine anti-inflammatory and painkillers, have diabetes and hypertension, Doctors unable to diagnose the condition.
The most probable reasons can be as follows:
Cervical spondilitis causing nerve compression and thus referred pain. This can be diagnosed by the Clinical evalaution and MRI of the cervical spine.
Local muscle spasm.
Fibromyalgia.
Vitamin D deficiency.
All these conditions have different treatments as per the cause found.
Surely steroids can not be given as you have diabetes.
Continue anti-inflammatory with painkiller properties.
Cervical collar if there is cervical spondilitis.
Local rubefacient liniments do help.
Getting a correct diagnosis is the basis of proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
