What Causes Left-sided Upper Back Pain?

I have mid back pain on my left side that has now become tender to the touch. It started out hurting only when touched, but now it s a constant dull pain that s tender when touched. If it s rubbed or pushed on the pain is intense and stops me in my tracks. I ve checked signs for the kidney, gall bladder and pancreas, but no symptoms match. Could it possibly just be a pulled muscle?
