Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 74 yr old male. I am just getting over a virus. Twice today once just after waking up this morning and just now after a 1 hour nap, I have had sever ++ leg cramps, from my toes to my hips. They lasted about 10 minutes. No position I went to made it any better. I am taking potassium and my blood potassium is 3.6, which is above minimum at my lab. Any ideas what is causing them and a med, or supplement ( quinine ? ) or exercise to stop from having them?
Arthralgia or leg pain / cramps can occur post viral infections. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be essential to reduce the pain. Calf pain can arise also due to muscle strain, sciatica, vitamin and mineral deficiency. Rest, ice compression, elevation of the limb and over the counter pain killers can be used. Vitamin D and calcium deficiency can also cause calf pain.Serum electrolytes and Blood sugar levels should be measured.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
