What Causes Leg Cramps After Red Yeast Rice Consumption?

I take red yeast rice to help lower my cholesterol, but I get leg cramps and sometimes break out around my lower lip. A doctor friend told me that is I take magnesium along with it I may be able to avoid some of these symptoms. She was going to get it for me but she lives in Nevada so she suggested I go to a health food store to try it before she orders me a full bottle. Can you tell me if this is a safe product for me? General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, you should get this weakness evaluated by a detailed neurological examination and blood work up for serum electrolytes including potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Take balanced diet with less fats and physical exertion with a good exercise schedule should be adopted for deranged cholesterol. Supplements for vitamin D3 B12 folic acid may be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
