What Causes Light Colored Areola?

Hello Dr. Rynne, I am a 57 yr. Old female. I started to notice in my early 50 s that the nipples and the areola of my breasts were getting lighter in color. When I look at them now, the color has lightened considerably. What causes this and should I be alarmed? Thank you very much Deborah
