General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. PCOD is usually associated with obesity & insulin resistance. Metformin helps use of glucose & thus acts against insulin resistance & reduces weight when accompanied by exercises ( to consume the glucose). You have been given Metformin for this. - PCOD is a hormonal disturbance causing problem in ovulation... so normal menstrual cycle( & pregnancy ) is not possible. It is characterized by such scanty/ profuse bleeding & irregular bleeding. - So the scanty bleeding you have is not due to Metformin- it could be spontaneous ovulation ( can be diagnosed by a doctor with i)cervical mucus testing- It becomes clear & stretchy ii) position of cervix- cervix becomes soft, moves high up . opens up) but mostly it's intermittent bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. * please follow treating doctor's advise. A prolonged & patient continuation of treatment does give favorable results.. for there are many effective treatments available for PCOD. Thanks
