Hello,
I can understand your concern for your husband's health
1) Ascites is due to less production of protein by liver. This indirectly indicate inappropriate liver function. This may be due to alcohol drinking since long time.
2) Alcohol drinking affect liver by replacing normal liver tissue with fibrous tissue and these changes can be detected on USG abdomen as cirrhosis of liver.
3) Normal AFP value and no structural changes in liver or pancreas does not warrant need of CT or MRI for further evaluation.
4) It is important to have complete liver function test first to rule out liver dysfunction due to alcohol. If this is the case then MRI with liver protocol would be recommended for further evaluation.

Hope I answered your query. If have any further query then I would be happy to help you.
Have a good day!
