What Causes Loss Of Appetite And Weight Loss In An Elderly Person?
My father is an 83 year old male that has recently been losing weight due to the inability to eat. We went to the Dr back in January and they did an MRI and CT scan and could not find any issues. He still does not find any satisfactions in eating and continues to lose weight. He has lost close to 50 lbs in total. He is looking very weak and feeble. He states that food does not taste bad but he can not choke it down.Do you have any suggestions what to check or how to help?
Hello, Welcome to healthcaremagic.com and thanks for sharing your concern with us. It appears that the problem is arising most probably because of less saliva production which itself can be a side effect of any medicine . Oral rinse before meals can solve such problems . Its always necessary in this age that we should focus on nutrient rich diet rather than a big portion size , so try to make the food more nutrient rich by using healthy stuff like olive oil , avocado . Esophagoscopy should also be done to rule out any esophagus related pathology like stricture , diverticula , or motility disorder . I would also suggest a appetite stimulant which you can ask to your PCP.
I wish you good health. Best Regards, DR.S.TOMAR
