What Causes Loss Of Appetite, Weight Loss And Chronic Cough?

My sister in law is 68 yo and has lost vision in one eye. She hasn t been looking well. Diminished appetite, weight loss, chronic cough and falls asleep everywhere she goes. But this may not have anything to do with what is going on with her now. She went to the eye doctor, who directed her to go to the hospital. She has inflammation of the arteries. The doctors are not giving my brother any information regarding how this could happen or the severity of her condtion. She will be having a biopsy done in the temple area from what he is telling me. Just trying to find some clarity. Thanks, Michelle

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 68 year old sister-in-law about having chronic cough, loss of appetite and weight, sleepiness, loss of vision in one eye and biopsy for possible arteritis.
The commonest causes of the symptoms are as follows:
Tuberculosis.
Cancer of lungs or so.
Any other chronic illness like autoimmune disease, greanulomatous diseases.
All these thing needs detailed history taking.
CT scan of chest and other parts as indicated.
Relevant tests of blood.
Sputum tests for gram and AFB staining for Tuberculosis.
Bronchoscopy and lavage biopsy.
As for vision loss the Ophthalmologist alone can tell the details and relevant treatment be carried out.
Once a proper diagnosis is done the treatment will be guided and effective.
Such things need Specialist's opinion and detailed investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
