My wife has, over the last year, slowed down in her walking speed, somewhat lethargic, lost 35 pounds and kind of stumbles when she walks. Also, when standing still, she has tendacy to talkke short steps to maintain her balance. She is 70 y/o and has always been active.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it is typical of Parkinson's onset and must be reviewed by a neurologist and detailed neurological examination must be done.

If short stepping gait is combined with tremor and rigidity it can arise serious suspicion of Parkinson's and diagnosis is based on clinical examination mostly.

Though cerebellar ataxia should be ruled out with cerebellar signs evaluation and Brain imaging with CT or MRI.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
