What Causes Loss Of Balance

I awoke and quickly got out of bed. I could not straighten up, leaning to my right. I self-checked for stroke and there were no signs. After an eternity, probably 5 minutes, I regained my balance. I am 62, not over-weight, don t smoke, exercise several times a week

Emergency Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi..
It looks more like postural hypotension.
Normally when we lay down on bed because the blood flow to the brain is even, but when we we suddenly get up the blood rushes back to the body due to gravity and the blood pools in the body and there is sudden reduction of blood to the brain causing hypotension with symptoms like giddiness, loss of balance, lightheartedness.
Things to do.
Do not get up immediately from the bed.
sit by the side of the bed and get up.
Drink lot of fluids.
If still not reduced then do elevate the both lower limbs for 2 mins and then get up of the bed.
If the symptoms persists then do visit a hospital to rule out inner ear fluid imbalance (vertigo), heart pathology, nervous system abnormality and other conditions.
