Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am on several hypertensive meds and Lasix. The past 6-8 months I have had trouble hearing in my right ear. I went to the ear, nose, throat doctor. My hearing in that ear is 50% yet the left is 98% good. He said nothing is wrong yet asked me to return for another hearing test in 2 months and possibly a hearing aide. I don't want to wear one.
Hi . I would be happy to answer your question. Lasix is a loop diuretic that works on the kidney to excrete sodium and excessive fluid. It is an ototoxic drug that can cause hearing impairment. People also tend to become electrolyte deficient while taking diuretics that can result in hypomagnesemia or low magnesium. Magnesium supplementation may be helpful. Magnesium levels are not always accurate as 99% of magnesium is intracellular and will not be picked up on a routine blood test.
