What Causes Loss Of Sense Of Smell And Taste After Tooth Extraction?
My mother had a tooth pulled not long ago. After the surgery, her whole upper cheek and side of her face was bruised and swelling. She was working in smoker's homes within a couple of days after the surgery. She has relied heavily on her sense of smell her whole life and since this surgery has not been able to smell most things and her taste is also affected. She is reading correlational studies that say the people they tested with no sense of smell died within 5 years or that loss of smell could be an indicator of Parkinson's later on etc. Do you think the loss of smell/taste is damaged nerves or something else? Do you have any tips on things she could do to kind of reset the system and smell again?
As per your complain and presentation of symptoms loss of sense of smell and taste after dental surgery is most commonly due to Nerve damage while other cause that is also commonly seen is Sinus infections and upper respiratory tract infections.
You should consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a PNS View x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
In case if it is due to sinuses then it has to be checked that any portion of tooth is not accidentally slipped into the sinuses that might be causing pain.. Also if there is infection then antibiotics and nasal decongestants can be advised..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
