What Causes Loss Of Smell After A Concussion?

After hitting his head very hard and suffering a concussion, my son also had a nosebleed when taken to the ER. They sprayed his nose with something to stop the bleeding and took some X-rays. Now, the next day he cannot smell anything and his ears are clogged. Is this normal?

Hi,
Welcom to Healthcaremagic.com.

I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about your son.

The loss of smell seems to me because of the application of local adrenaline and inflammation to the sensory nasal mucosa.

Also the ear blockage can be because of inflammation to the tissue which in turn leads to blockage of the eustatian tube of ear.

It seems to me normal related to symptoms and medication. But you need to keep watch if your son feel any dizziness or loss of consciousness, if it happens you must visit an emergency room.
Hope the answer will be helpful to you.
Regards
Dr Muzaffar
