What Causes Loss Of Vision Along With Abdominal And Back Pain?

Hello, About a month ago I woke up and realized the vision in my left eye was nearly gone. Saw 2 ophthalmologists. One said allergies, the other said he saw nothing and that my condition is puzzling and gave me steroid eye drops. Since then I am starting to have mid back pain upper abdomen pain that follows my rib cage to my sides, no pain in my stomach at all. I also have numbness in both legs, it is more severe in my left leg and buttock area and my feet have been tingling. The past 2 days my upper thighs have been in severe pain, at least a 10 on the pain scale. I did go to my doctor and he assigned blood work. He did check for insect borne illnesses as well as everything else, including diabetes. On Wednesday I had an MRI that revealed nothing. I went to the hospital last night and they did more blood work, the only thing found was a slight low level of B12 (216). I also had a chest CT last night which showed nothing. I am getting worried that this may be a neurological condition. My sight in my left eye has gotten worse. I am wondering if this is all connected and if I should see a neurologist.

Hi,

Noted your history suggestive of neurological involvement of Ophthalmic nerve, pain in abdomen, back, multiple investigations and so on.
Yes, sometimes the symptoms can be confusing and do not match the standard clinical picture usually present by books.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Take second opinion of different Specialists so that they can evaluate you clinically differently and ask for special investigations to know.
Like loss of vision is an emergency and the cause can always be found if you visit a Specialized center for eyes ans the Doctors over there interact with every disease of the eyes.
This allows proper diagnosis so that proper management can be done.
CT/ MRI and such investigations are always supplementary to the proper history taking, clinical examination and relevant investigations to come to a conclusion, hence visit the Doctors who rely more on proper clinical examination.,
Pain in back, upper abdomen and rib cage can be due to nerve involvement of the spinal origin and MRI of spine may help.
Deficiency of Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and A can cause such symptoms hence you need to take supplements of multivitamins, mineral and trace elements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
