Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When My husband eats loud noise come from his mouth/throat - he is 67 and this ha been happening about 30 years ago. It is very embarassing in a social setting especially around the dinner table. Sometimes he chokes on his food. He will not see his doctor for it. He is also very overweight.
I do not think that getting noises while chewing is a medical pathology or requires attention of a doctor especially when it is there for as long as you probably know your husband.
When we chew, our tongue moves food bolus from one side of the mouth to the other side. This causes sounds you are referring to. If the lips or mouth are closed during eating and he cultivates the habit of chewing with closed mouth, the sounds can be muffled. Eating slowly can help too.
I can understand the social embarrassing situation you are describing. Talking to your husband in a way that he does not feel insulted and gets ready to change the habit may help. Make sure you do not nag him in front of others about this.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Take care.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
