Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is 78 and just had lab work done. His dhea levels are very low. 28 out of normal range of 80-560. His doctor just put him on a dhea supplement as well as an adrenal supplement. What would cause such a low dhea level? Also his B12 is low - just started with B 12 shots and oral B12 sublingual pellets. Low Vit D as well - recently started with 5000 units/day
A low level of DHEAS may be due to adrenal insufficiency, adrenal dysfunction, Addison disease, or hypopituitarism, a condition that causes low levels of the pituitary hormones that regulate the production and secretion of adrenal hormones.
People taking DHEA supplements will have elevated blood levels of DHEAS. As your husband has already been put on DHEA supplement, his condition will improve.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician

What Causes Low DHEA Levels?
Hi, Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) is a male sex hormone that is present in both men and women.
