What Causes Low HB Count In Blood Post A Hemodialysis?

Hi doc. My dad is a kidney failure patient. Undergo haemodialysis 3x a week for almost 13 years. His haemoglobin level is really a worry lately. Even after taking haemoglobin injection, the haemoglobin level is low. What is your opinion doc? What should he take to increase the haemoglobin? Thank you.

Hi & Welcome.

Erythropoietin is an important hormone produced by the kidneys.
It stimulates the production of red blood cells from the bone marrow.

When kidneys are diseased or damaged, they do not make enough erythropoietin. As a result, the bone marrow makes fewer red blood cells, causing anemia.

To correct such type of anemia erythropoeitin is given in the form of injection along with iron tablets to help the body make red blood cells.

Based on the history given, your father seems to be suffering from "erythropoeitin refractory anemia" for which he needs to be properly evaluated by a nephrologist/hematologist. For such cases injections of anabolic steroids like Nandrolone decanoate are effectively used to increase the level of hemoglobin.

Hope this answers your questions.
