Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Low Appetite And Painful Toe In An Obese Elderly Person?
My mother-n-law is 86 years old. Sits almost entirely from the time she gets up until going to bed. She cannot get up out of a chair by herself. Cannot get off a toilet by herself unless the seat is a handicapped hi-rise seat. She is out of breath just trying to stand from sitting. She is over weight. She drinks Starbucks all day until she starts her vodka and 7-up between 4-5 pm. She does wear depends , but most days does not even get up to go to the bathroom from her sitting position. She will tell us she has no appetite.Currently, today she cannot walk and her big toe is frozen in a very painful position.
First of all, it's sad to know what your mother had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to gouty arthritis and she needs to get her uric acid levels tested. Also, lifestyle and dietary modifications may be needed as it can aggravate her current issues.
Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be helpful for symptomatic relief. Local capsaicin gel may be used for inflammation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
