Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has type 2 diabetes. He is on metformin. About three weeks ago his doctor started him on glimepiride 1 mg twice a day. He has started having low blood sugar. Last night it was 53 and tonight it is 49. He called his doctor today but he never heard from his doctor. What suggestions do you have.
Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) seems to be due to slightly large dose of Glimepride.
Glimepride is an effective long acting oral anti-diabetic medication which is initially prescribed in the dose of 1 mg once a day with the break fast or first main meal of the day and its response is monitored for 2 weeks and depending the response the dose can be increased to 1 mg per day.
Since because of its long duration of action it is prescribed once daily. The second dose in the evening seems to be responsible for his low blood glucose level, so he should avoid the second dose after consulting his treating doctor.
Hope this answers your query.
