Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my son is 3 years and 5 months old. Today his temperature suddenly rose to 38.6. I gave him paracetamol and have just rechecked his temperature while he slept. It was down to 35.3. He has been quite pale for a few days. But eating and drinking normally. He does not have a big appetite at the best of times. He has had recurrent coughing episodes at night over the past few months and has thrown up on several occasions in his sleep to get rid of the phlegm. His bowel motions are often very soft. Recently checked by GP a few weeks ago for routine immunisations. Should I worry about this low temperature?
Your son's symptoms are indication acute viral infection. The low body temperature to 35.3 was due to paracetamol use (perhaps higher dose than required for his body). However, such changes in body temperature can happen due to viral infections too. I think not to worry for this time, as long as your child is eating and drinking normally, this means he is healthy enough to face this acute illness.
However, he needs energy as he is showing pale. I think you should check with his caring doctor in order to rule out more serious ENT infections, and to provide accurate treatment. Keep well hydrated. Add vitamins to his daily diet.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
