What Causes Low Grade Fever Post Hernia Repair Surgery?

I have had a hernia repair and an ostomy revision. The doctor used the pig mesh. Since then I have had a low grade fever every day stopping at 99.9 degrees. I have had a CBC and a CRT and they show everything is normal. I think that I am having a reaction to the mesh. During this time I have had numerous problems with the new stoma.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of new that is ostomy revision and hernia repair with mesh, develop low grade fever up to 99.9 degree F.
Since your CBC and CRT are normal we can say that there may not be an infection but if one is given antibiotics then these reports may come normal in spite of an actual low grade infection existing.
Surely another possibility of reaction to mesh is known but then it can cause local inflammation, redness, itching and so on.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Go for blood culture and sensitivity reports as it may show something.
Also go for MRI of the abdominal wall. This may show if there is any collection and if present for for aspiration and its lab test.
A course of another antibiotic may help.
Also take an anti-inflammatory medications.
Antihistamine may help if there is any local reaction.
Have regular follow up with your Doctor so that any complication can be picked up faster if present and treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
