What Causes Low Grade Fever With Fatigue And Drowsiness?

Yesterday was Easter and my grandson of 4 1/2 years old woke up with a low grade fever, red cheeks and complaining he was cold (chills, I assume). He is wearing flannel pj s! All day, he has been sleeping, has drank water ( it was what he wanted) and, when he wakes up, acts tired and again, very sleepy! Gave him one teaspoon of Acetaminophen for children; only once. Sugar high from eating lots of candy yesterday or was he incubating something and it exploded today? Thanks. BTW, I am the grandmother.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There could be several possible causes of a low-grade fever with fatigue and drowsiness in a child, including:
- Viral infection: A viral infection can cause a low-grade fever, fatigue, and general malaise. Children can contract viral infections from contact with other children, contaminated surfaces, or mosquito bites.
- Bacterial infection: A bacterial infection can also cause similar symptoms. This may require antibiotics to treat.
- Allergic reaction: An allergic reaction to food or other environmental factors may cause fatigue, drowsiness, and low-grade fever.
- Dehydration: Dehydration can cause fatigue, drowsiness, and a low-grade fever. It is important to ensure that your grandson is drinking enough fluids, especially if he is vomiting or experiencing diarrhea.
- Medication side effects: Certain medications, such as antibiotics or antihistamines, can cause drowsiness and fatigue.

It is difficult to determine the exact cause without a physical examination by a healthcare provider. If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if your grandson experiences other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash, it is recommended that you contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
