What Causes Low Hemoglobin Levels While On Procrit For Myelodysplastic Syndrome?

I am age 83 and have myelodysplastic syndrome. I have been taking ProCrit shots for 8 weeks. My HGB levels are running around 9.0. When can I expect them to rise to about 11.0? also, what level should expect to be normal now for my age?I am otherwise in excellent health and am not tired or weak?Keith B.

Hi,

The low hemoglobin is because of the bone marrow suppression you have and this will take time to build up. For your age, the ideal limit is 13 but with this disease it is hard to achieve even on treatment. Get your treatment and repeat your hemoglobin levels after 2-3 weeks.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
