What Causes Low Hemoglobin Levels While Treating Iron Deficiency?

I have iron deficiency anemia and have had colonoscopy, endoscopy, ct with contrast on small bowel and have been taking iron supplements for 18 months. All tests normal but haemoglobin and ferritin have not improved in over 14 months. What should I do next?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Age, gender, other medical illness not mentioned. Failure of oral iron supplements. Based on the history you seem to have developed unresponsiveness to oral supplements. It could be due failure to absorb oral iron (malabsorption or disease of the intestines), mixed deficiency, anemia of chronic disease, ongoing blood loss, severe deficiency with chronic bleeding. Depending upon the level of hemoglobin you may need either iron injections or packed cell transfusions to correct the deficit hemoglobin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
