What Causes Low Iron Levels In The Blood?

Reviewing my blood work with my doctor, my iron levels decreased this last year.. they have fluctuated, last year it was 101 after having been in the mid 50s in years past.. This time it was 24. It was also the 2nd day of my period which has been very heavy the last six to eight months.. He wants to recheck the bloodwork since it was done in July. He says i m not showing any other signs of anemia. I did notice my white blood cell counts were a little higher although in normal range and my RDW was just above the normal range. He seems to think it may be heavy periods. Should I be concerned? I do have severe anxiety and depression issues so of course my mind is racing with possible illnesses.

Hello,

I must say that I agree with your doctor. Low iron levels are usually caused by loss of blood, most common sources are gastrointestinal ulcers (or other digestive blood loss) and increased loss of blood from the uterus. Given your history of heavy periods, some depletion of blood stores is understandable. I do not see any reason for alarm.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
