QUESTION ON MY MOM AGE 82 140 LBS 5 FT 6 IN HAS HIGH BP CONTROLED THRU MEDS / 125-130 OVER 62-75 USUALLY TYPE 2 DIABETIC / BLOOD SUGAR NORMALY UNDER CONTROL BETWEEN 110-140 LEG FROM SOCK DOWN VERY RED BEEN TO DR TO CHECK PLATELETTES LOW 52 JUST HAD ULTRA SOUND ON SPLEEN / RESULTS DUE BACK TOMORROW FEEL OK, NO REAL SYNPTOMS OTHER THAN VERY RED LEGS ALMOST LOOKS LIKE ITS ON A CREW SOCK LINE //

At such an elderly age, low platelets are indicative of a bone marrow process, likely myelodysplasia in which the platelet precursors are not able to produce platelets as they are not functioning properly. Other causes could be peripheral destruction of platelets or infiltration of bone marrow by other cells. I would advice you to consult your doctor and if needed get a bone marrow study done.
