What Causes Lower Abdominal Cramps During Pregnancy?

Hi Doctor, My wife is pregnant confirmed today. This is first time she is pregnant. She has little pain in lower abdomain... it is same like pain in periods. Is it abnormal? We have visited local doctor and she has not advised any medicins/injections. Please let me know if injections are required to prevent miscarriage?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
During the first 3 months of pregnancy, there will be little amount of uterine contractions which is normal. These contractions are usually irregular and normal. However we cannot take it for granted that the apin is only due to uterine contractions as I do not have the information about her duration of pregnancy. Therefore, It is also important to rule out a Urinary tract infection. Miscarriage is usually present with regular rhythmic contractions with severe pain and bleeding/spotting. With the history you have given, it is unlikely that it can be miscarriage. Hope this clarifies your question.
