General & Family Physician, Dr. Venkatesh's Response
Thank you for your question. I understand your concern. Painful defecation may be due to hemorrhoids, or rectal fissure. Both this will cause intense pain on defecation and blood stained stools. Blood will not be mixed up with stools but may fall in drops after defecation. The first tip to avoid this is not to strain while passing stools. He should be advised to drink more water, have plenty of fruits and raw vegetables(salads) so that the stool becomes soft. Hardening of stools will worsen the situation. So avoid meat and spicy food and have more foods containing digestive fibers. If the stools are still hard he may try out some laxatives also can take sitz bath in warm water. If the still the problem continues he should undergo endoscopic evaluation by a general surgeon.Hope this will help you.
