What Causes Lower Flank Pain?

Good evening. My son is 16 years old. He woke up pain in the left lower flank where it meets the hip bone. He stated that pain was a 7 (1-10). It seems to be kind of a bulge, warm to the touch. Made worse when he laughs or sneeze. Yesterday he did a cross country race, he does not think this has anything to do with it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There may be several things that can occur. But I suspect either intestinal obstruction or volvulus in the first place.
However, I would like to ask:
1. is there diarrhea or constipation
2. is there nausea ?
3. is there a problem during urination?
4. is there a problem during the expulsion of the stool?
5. is there any fever?

I would like to suggest some tests:
1. Complete blood Count
2. Liver Function Tests
3. kidney function,
4. Tests for electrolytes
5. CT scan of the abdomen
6. Stool test

Follow some guidelines

To help prevent colorectal cancer, eat a balanced diet low in fat with plenty of vegetables and fruits, don't smoke.

To help prevent hernias, avoid heavy lifting, which increases the pressure inside the abdomen and may force a section of intestine to protrude through a vulnerable area of your abdominal wall. Avoid foods that may become lodged in the diverticula, such as seeds and popcorn.

For pain, OTC pain medications can be taken. Can also take Paracetamol.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
