hi -- I had a light birthmark on my thigh for the past few years. About a month ago, I noticed a small lump in the middle of the birthmark. Since then, the birthmark has seemed to grow, and it now looks like a large ugly bruise. It doesn t hurt or itch, but I m worried. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
It is always a good idea to get a new or changing birthmark checked out by a doctor, especially if it starts to look different or if there is a lump or bump within it. While many birthmarks are harmless, some can be a sign of skin cancer or other skin conditions. It is difficult to say exactly what is causing the lump in the middle of your birthmark without a physical exam, but it could be a mole or a benign growth.
However, it is important to rule out the possibility of skin cancer. Your doctor may want to do a biopsy or other tests to determine the cause of the lump and any changes in the birthmark. It is always better to be safe than sorry, so make an appointment with a dermatologist or your primary care physician as soon as possible.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
