What Causes Lump In Throat While On Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Treatment?

Hi am a 24 year old female with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, currently taking 25 Mcg levothyroxine. After just having my bloodwork done, which was great, TSH of 1.39, FT4 of 1.0, I woke up about a week later with a "lump" in my throat. I went to my family doctor who ordered an ultrasound and TPO antibodies. My TPO was 89(normal is 0-8) and my thyroid ultrasound showed mild enlargement and a new nodule. I was ultrasounded six months ago and had no nodules and very slight enlargement. Because of my age and the recent onset of the nodule, the radiologist labeled it as "suspicious", I also have had an uncle to have total thyroidectomy due to cancer. I was feeling great when I had my bloodwork done, but since then, I don't know if its the worries of all thats going on or if its actually my thyroid getting worse, I notice the depression coming back, fatigue, a missed period and extreme bloating. I have missed periods in the past when my thyroid was first discovered to be hypo-. Could this be ovarian failure running along with the hashimoto's? My thyroid is still very swollen feeling, along with my lymph nodes being enlarged and it has been about three weeks since this began. Is this just my hashimoto's getting worse? I live in a rural area and have difficulty finding good healthcare and ANY specialists...any suggestions?

Hi,

Regarding the thyroid nodule, I would recommend to perform a fine needle biopsy aspiration as the nodule is suspicious in ultrasound and you have a positive family history for thyroid cancer. It will give the exact information about the nodule's nature.

The level of the antibodies you reported is relatively low to cause ovarian failure and a missed period can not be suggestive for ovarian failure. If it happens often, you need to exclude a polycystic ovarian failure as it is the most common pathology causing irregularity of menstrual cycle at your age.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Dr. Mirjeta
