Hi. My spouse has a lump on the middle of his back right by his spine and he also had a hole right there that seems to have dirt build up of some sort.. Now when i first noticed it was about a month ago and when i pressed down on the hole i felt that there was a lump underneath it but now the lump has grown and raised up till i font have to press down to feel it all i have to touch it and i can feel it... He says it do not hurt but the lump and the hole is still there... Can some one give me some advice or have a clue on what is this????
Hello and welcome to HCM, A lump at base of spine with a hole in the middle may be due to pilonidal sinus. A pilonidal sinus is formed by in growing of hair shafts into the skin. The blind hole thus formed may get infected and may bleed also. I suggest you to consult a surgeon for clinical assessment and relevant investigations. If the lump is not due to pilonidal sinus, it may be due to growth of soft tissues. Relevant investigations like aspiration cytology need to be done to know the nature of the lesion. Management can be planned thereafter.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
