Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just come back from the doctors and have been diagnosed with having Mastitis. I m not a mother so it s not due to breast feeding however do have a nipple piercing that I have had for 11 months. My doctor was Indian and had never seen such a piercing and has told me to immediately take it out and has prescribed me with Dicloxacillin. She came across rather judgemental of my modification and so I was just wanting a second opinion as to whether I should immediately take this course of action or if it would be fine to see if it improves over the next couple of days first? It already has since yesterday.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand it. It seems the nipple piercing has caught infection at the site of pierce after the procedure/ the piercing needle was not sterilized. But development of mastitis itself suggests inflammation of breast tissue, The basic treatment consists of removing the cause & treat the inflammation & infection .Failing this, it may develop into an abscess.. which needs incision & drainage with medication & dressings for several days. So I would advise to follow the instructions given with an addition of NSAID like Brufen 400 mg twice a day along with antibiotic ..to be taken after eating. Thanks. Thanks,
