What Causes Memory Loss And Intermittent Seizure After Surviving An Accident?

I don t know if anyone will read this or be able to help, but I have a son who is 30 and he has been having episodes for years. At first they told him that he was having vasovagal (not sure of spelling) episodes. Now he has been in two car accidents, going off of the road and not knowing what happened or remembering anything. At least twice in the last six months, he has lost an entire day to this episode . He says that he is all messed up and you cannot really communicate with him, then he breaks out in a really bad (I mean a soaking sweat) then he complains of being cold and shivers so hard that he almost seems like he is having a seizure. He goes through this off and on for a whole day, beginning in the morning and then he cannot remember the entire day or a few days preceeding. I am so worried about him. He is a very hard worker and he and his wife have a home and a one year old daughter and I am so afraid that something may happen and he will hurt or lose the ones he loves, or something may happen to him or someone else. He gets very depressed after these episodes. He has seen his regular doctor, a neurologist, and a neuropsychologist, but they cannot find anything wrong. Please tell me if you know anything like this happening in anyone else or if you have any ideas to help him.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is good to know that your son is safe and under treatment of a neurologist and a neuro-psychologist. It's nice that the treating doctors did not find anything wrong (on clinical examination and reports). It looks like he is in psychological shock (emotional trauma / shock)due to the life threatening stressful event he had to go through(had to experience).

Symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder may get triggered due to anything which makes him uncomfortable. Help him relax, do not force him to remember the event, help him come out of it. Symptoms may include increased blood pressure and heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tension, cold clammy skin, shivering, nausea, diarrhea or nightmares.

Other symptoms may be trouble concentrating or troubled thinking. You are suggested to take the help of a Counselor or a Psychiatrist. Your son may need treatment by medications as well as therapy (CPT, prolonged exposure therapy, SIT, eye movement de-sensitization and reprocessing, etc). It is effective. Give him enough time to relax, have patience. Keep him well fed and hydrated. Help him normalize, keep him busy.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
