What Causes Menstrual Like Cramps In Spite Of Taking Tylenol During Pregnancy?

I have had 2 preterm babies already, and I am 29 weeks along with my 3rd. I have had a hard time getting any information that seems consistent with my normal obgyn so I would like to hear some advice from someone else. In the last few weeks I have had some menstrual like cramping and braxton hick contractions that come and go. I was checked and there was no thinning or dilation of my cervix so nothing was concerning to my doctor. Two night ago, I awoke to cramping in my lower back which lead to tossing and turning all night and no sleep. I have had the pain in my back for 2 days now. Its a dull achey pain, accompanied by cramping/spasms that will intensify and ease off. The cramping/spasms will come and go anywhere between every 10 to 30 mins and last about 30 seconds to a minute each. I have had some braxton hicks but sometimes I wont even notice them unless I physically feel my stomach. I have been drinking tons of water, I have taken Tylenol, tried cold and warm compresses and it still hasn t eased up. I cant even get comfortable in any position. Should I be concerned? I have dealt with sciatic nerve pain all my life from sports and car accidents and this isn t the same pain, so I dont believe that is what could be wrong.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The Tylenol contains paracetamol and it works as mild analgesic in certain pain conditions. The cramps of pregnancy period are usually related to stretching of the uterine wall and hence do not respond best to Tylenol in many women.

In my clinic, I do recommend prescription of dicyclomine combined with paracetamol for best colic relief, however, you are advised to call your OBGYN before acting on the same. At home, ginger tea and chamolime tea are best used molecules with excellent colic relief properties in many of the pregnant women.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
